AFADCM-40

A classroom lecture on Dependency and Family Law Mediation with attentive students.

Advanced Family And Dependency Court Mediation-40 is only offered to SCFM volunteers.  Since 2016, SCFM has been providing our AFADCM-40 for new SCFM volunteer mediators by invitation.  There is a $499.00 fee for AFADCM-40.

As a small, underfunded nonprofit, we have no scholarships to offer, but we encourage you to seek a sponsor if you need one, and we will do what we can to facilitate that.

A mix of:

i. Live Zoom Classes,

ii. Live Zoom Dependency Court Mediation Simulation,

iii. On-Demand (pre-recorded) Classes,

iv. 7:45AM (actual) pre-mediation team preparation meetings for the day’s mediations,

v. Real world dependency co-mediation observations, and

vi. Co-mediations.

AFADCM-40

Most mediators spend their careers resolving disputes over money, employment, or property.  At Southern California Family Mediation, volunteer co-mediators do something harder and more important - we help parents who may never agree on anything, agree on what matters most: a safe, stable life for their children. One dependency co-mediation can give you more life & mediation experience than some mediators accumulate in a year.

We have the highest family success rates.  That's not a coincidence - it's what happens when the right mediators show up the right way for the right reasons.

If you've been waiting for the work your passion and training have been pointing you toward - this is it.

SCFM AFADCM-40 CLASS OF 2026

We're looking for volunteer mediators ready to commit weekly for 48 mediations, and offering flexibility after that.

We will invest in you. We ask that you invest in the families we serve, not just while it's convenient, but for the long haul.

The next SCFM Class of 2026 begins now.  Live education sessions, evening 6:30-8:30pm PST, and Saturday morning Mock Mediations 9:00am-1:15pm PST, are included. These are when the Class comes together for Q&A and discussions.  You'll have the opportunity to learn a lot fast.

The children and parents who sit across from you will remember you.  Make sure it's for the right reasons.

What's the onboarding like?

  1. If you're selected to join the team, you'll begin watching/listening to the pre-recorded courses, and we will meet together for live meetings online.   You'll learn our style-system of mediation, how we work together, and how dependency court works.
  2. We'll have Court Security Services reach out to you for your security clearance.   You'll move quickly on this.
  3. We'll work together to choose your mediation day of the week.  We have distinct teams of co-mediators, Tuesday through Friday.
  4. You'll be invited to join our 7:45AM Pre-Mediation Meetings (the most practical and dense learning).
  5. Next, you'll have the opportunity to observe two or three co-mediations.
  6. In less than two months, you'll be co-mediating with a Lead Mediator, and be guided through the real world administration, co-mediation, and agreement writing processes.

  • At dependency, every case is so uniquely filled with twists, turns, and unexpected challenges, that the majority of the learning takes place after you begin co-mediating.
  • Your knowledge and wisdom will grow and change your understanding of what it means to be human.

What's it like to be a part of the SCFM Team?

We create a Co-Mediators Schedule for each day of the week, two to three months in advance, taking into account  vacations & availability.

Mediations are scheduled by courtrooms, three to five weeks in advance.  You will get confidential attorney & parent contact information, a summary of the orders of the Court and key issues to work on from attorneys, as well as confidential case history and orders.

Once a mediation has been scheduled on a particular day, the judge, four attorneys, the parents, the children and your co-mediator are all counting on you showing-up, no matter what.  We mediate sick and at the local coffee shop with headphones if our internet goes down.

On your day of mediation, all mediators scheduled that day and at least one Supervising Mediator will meet together online, at 7:45AM, to discuss and strategize the cases and to answer questions.

Morning chaos may include tacking down parents & getting them online and settled in a private location. Co-mediators (and interpreters if needed) will begin meeting with parents at 8:45AM - taking breaks as needed - and concluding no later than 3:30PM.

There's an agreement review and debriefing process, but we'll discuss that during our classes together.

When the mediation has ended, you're done.  There's no follow-up required, and any communication attempted from parents or attorneys get handled by a Supervising Mediator.

Requirements

Volunteer Opportunities

Our exceptional team of volunteer co-mediators appreciate the importance of showing up consistently for families when they need us most.  SCFM Volunteer Mediators have a combination of education and experience that may include six years of college and/or extensive family mediation-related experience.

SCFM Volunteer Associate Co-Mediators may have less combined education and less mediation experience when they first join the SCFM team.

Passion & Compassion: Come with a service heart for the families and children we serve as your primary motivation, or you won't last.  We are a future-focused organization, viewing each mediation as an opportunity to learn and grow, personally and professionally.  There's nothing wrong with passion for mediation and wanting to become a GREAT mediator.

No legal experience is required.

Reliability: Our families, attorneys, and judges sometimes wait weeks for a mediation appointment, and SCFM volunteers must be able to show up consistently for their scheduled mediations.

All SCFM Volunteer Mediators and Volunteer Associate Co-Mediators must successfully complete our  AFADCM-40 (Advanced Family And Dependency Court Mediation-40) education program, before and during their first year of observations and co-mediations, no exceptions and no substitutes.

All SCFM Volunteers who come into contact with families or confidential information must successfully obtain a Los Angeles County Superior Court security clearance, no exceptions and no substitutes.

SCFM Volunteer Leadership Team Grant Writer, Fundraiser

Another great way to support the families and children we serve is by helping to fund  this growing 501c3 nonprofit program.  Our Development Team has current opportunities for a grant writer, a fundraiser, and a social media expert.

Leadership Tiger Team Volunteer Professionals & Intern/Externships

Our volunteer Leadership Tiger Team Professionals are second to none, keeping everything working behind the scenes, helping families, parents, and co-mediation teams make the magic happen.

Supervising Mediator (internal)

A few of our best and most experienced co-mediators are promoted to the pinnacle of court-connected mediation exceptionalism, SCFM Dependency Court Supervising Mediator.  Supervising Mediators are available to answer mediators' questions before and during mediations and to help review Mediated Agreements with the co-mediation teams.

Opportunities like this are rare.

How it works

  • As a team, we serve co-parenting families at all LACSC (Los Angeles County Superior Court), dependency courts - one of the most challenging and rewarding environments, where families and kids need us most.
  • We work in teams using the co-mediation model with a Supervising Mediator to help navigate the uniqueness of each case.
  • We are agreement-writing mediators.
  • We are a transformation-based program that employs facilitative and evaluative styles when needed to best serve the families & children when they need us most.
  • The goal is to help young families negotiate their own written, custom-detailed, mediated Parenting Plan, Visitation Plan, or Adoption Plan to help them navigate challenges going forward.

Where

  • Most of us co-mediate from home office, online.
  • We also offer in-person co-mediation opportunities at the Edmund D. Edelman Children's Courthouse in Monterey Park and the Alfred J. McCourtney Juvenile Justice Center in the Antelope Valley.

How

  • Thanks to our unique 12-year relationship with the Court, parents are ordered to mediation (but they can't be ordered to agree).
  • There are four attorneys on each case, and case files provide guidance and the orders of the Court.

Let The Journey Begin!
